Embroidery - When is it a good option for branding

Embroidery branding

Embroidery is thread, stitched out to make a design onto fabric, to make logos, words and designs.

Area increases exponentially with size, and so does the cost of embroidery.

The cost of Embroidery is largely determined by size of the area to be embroidered as well as how much of the area is covered by actual embroidery. Think a solid square compared to a paragraph of words. The words would use less stitches compared to the filled square, assuming they are the same size. And would therefore be cheaper.

The cost of embroidery is normally charged per 1000 stitches, with an average of around 250 stitches per Sq cm. At OUMAN we price all embroidery the same and again absorb any variation that might require more stitches than we accounted for. However If the difference in costs makes the branding job unprofitable, we will of course let the client know and work with them to get to a reasonable solution. Either cost adjustment or alternatives such as fabric fills, Applique, or another branding options such as DTF. 95% of all orders have no issue with the embroidery cost, only very large areas end up needing to be reviewed.

When to choose Embroidery as a branding option

For logo's and hard wearing areas like overalls or caps. Embroidery makes perfect sense if it is the style you want to go for, or you want branding that lasts as long as the item it's on. It also makes financial sense if the size of the branding is reasonably small, around 10cm x 10cm or 20cm x 5cm, 30cm x 3cm.

For small area's, embroidery is affordable and quick to create. The slowest process is the hooping and alignment of the garment to get the branding in the right orientation. If you've never hooped something for an embroidery machine, we suggest you don't, it's a painful process that only gets easier with lots of practice. Luckily our embroidery ladies are very good at this process so you're in good hands :)

20cm x 20cm is 4 times larger and 10cm x 10cm

That might sound like an odd thing to say, but it's just to illustrate that with width x height, the area and hence cost increases exponentially,

For example a logo that is 8cm x 8cm will cost you only 64% of a 10cm x 10cm of the same design. Something to think about when choosing your branding options.

Complex designs, small writing or gradients

Embroidery excels at flat color filled areas, and writing 4mm high and higher. But struggles to reproduce complex designs with gradients, many small areas of color (polka dot for example).

Your design will be translated into an appropriate representation that allows the embroidery machine to stitch out the design with minimal color changes, and thread trims. This may change the feel of the design, so be sure to ask for a single item if you need to test this before larger production runs.
